My early research focused on the development of terahertz imaging, tomographic and spectroscopic systems, with a particular focus on the application of terahertz-frequency quantum cascade lasers. In recent years my research interests have included near-field terahertz microscopy, and the investigation of how intense terahertz pulses interact with quantum heterostructures and other solid state systems.

One highlight of my career has been the first observation of the self-mixing effect in terahertz quantum cascade lasers, which over the past 10 years has paved the way for the development of a range of systems for three-dimensional imaging, biomedical imaging, materials analysis and terahertz microscopy.
